South Australia wants space tourists

A report by ABC says The South Australian Tourism Commission wants British billionaire, and head of Virgin, Richard Branson, to consider the State’s outback for one of his most ambitious ventures.

The British entrepreneur hopes his Virgin Galactic spacecraft, which is still being developed, will take tourists into space within the next two years.

The Tourism Commission’s chief executive, Andrew McEvoy, says there’s potential for South Australia to benefit from the project.

It’s a tiny niche market, I mean 350 people worldwide signed up to do it, at $AU225,000 they are clearly high net worth individuals,” Mr McEvoy said.

“So what we’d imagine is they’d come to places like South Australia and spent a great time at our fantastic lodges.

“I think it would be a small high niche opportunity for tourism in South Australia,” he said.
