Southwest Airlines cancels hundreds of Chicago flights as de-icer supply runs low
Southwest Airlines scrapped more than 200 flights out of snowbound Chicago’s Midway International Airport after the airline admitted it is running low on de-icer.
A total of 220 flights were ‘proactively’ canceled on Sunday with new supplies of de-icer not expected until sometime on Monday.
The cancelations were for ‘ the safety of our customers and crews’ a Southwest statement said.
A winter storm has blanketed Midway with more than 13 inches of snow in the past four days.
The city of Chicago has recorded significant snowfall for nearly 10 consecutive days, something that has only happened twice before in more than a century, the National Weather Service said.
Southwest said it is working with passengers to accommodate their travel plans and said ‘multiple’ shipments of de-icer fluid are due on Monday.
It expects a ‘close to normal’ service to resume on Monday but more cancellations or delays are possible.
