Southwest Airlines extends grounding of 737 Max fleet through Labor Day

Sunday, 14 Jun, 2019 0

Southwest Airlines on Thursday followed rival American in extending cancelations of its grounded Boeing 737 Max planes.

Southwest will keep the planes out of its summer schedules through September 2, extending it from the previously announced date of August 5.

It’s an entirely expected move with no indication when the jets will get FAA clearance to fly again.

Max aircraft were grounded in mid-March after two fatal crashes within five months killed more than 300 passengers and crew.

Southwest has 34 Max planes in its fleet and expects to cancel about 100 flights a day.

The airline has an all-Boeing 737 fleet totalling about 750 jets.

"With the timing of the Max’s return-to-service still uncertain, we are again revising our plans to remove the Max from our schedule through September 2," Dallas-based Southwest said
