Southwest announces restrictions on wheelchair users

Monday, 15 Sep, 2025 0

Southwest Airlines has announced new restrictions for some wheelchair users.

From September 25, those who use mobility devices powered by lithium batteries will have to remove the battery before checking in.

It is an additional safety measure to minimize fire risk, it says.

“Lithium batteries have become one of the most common sources of smoke and fire incidents on aircraft. While these events are rare, quick access and visibility are critical to keeping everyone onboard safe,” the airline said.

The new rule also places restrictions on the size of lithium batteries to 300 watt-hours or less.

The airline said batteries larger than 300 watt-hours will still be able to travel on Southwest flights until January 11, 2026.

“After January 11, devices with batteries above the limit will no longer be accepted for transport.”

Southwest recently announced that all lithium power banks have to be visible and easily accessible in the cabin during flights.
