Southwest fare increase matched
Southwest Airlines’ fare increase of up to $10 for a one-way ticket has been matched by most other major airlines on Monday, with notable exception so far of JetBlue.
Southwest’s fare increase was necessitated by a $600 million increase in their jet fuel costs.
Effective last Friday night, Southwest increased fares for nearly two-thirds of its routes, ranging from $2 on flights up to 400 miles to the $10 increase for its most non-advance purchase fares.
Southwest is the only consistently profitable major U.S. carrier, earning $548 million last year. High fuel costs have kept Southwest and other carriers from enjoying the full benefit of strong demand for travel, which has filled many of their planes to capacity, reported Associated Press.
