Spain to get first private airport
Spain is reportedly to built its first private airport, with the aim of attracting budget carriers with lower prices.
According to the USA Today website, the new facility, which will be named Don Quixote airport, will be situated 125 miles south of Madrid in the La Mancha region.
The website reports that the airport will aim to attract no-frills carriers with “low prices, flexible timetables, and better treatment than they are currently offered” at the main state-run facilities.
Thomas Herrera, of the construction firm CR Aeropuertos, is quoted as saying: “Mainly it is charter or budget companies that are approaching us. They don’t want to go to the main centre because they do not treat them well and they charge them the same as the main airlines.
“Our tariffs will be, in general, about 30 per cent cheaper than Madrid. Here, they can land at whatever time they like because the slots aren’t taken up by big companies.”
