Spirit Airlines passenger could face life in prison after sex assault conviction
A passenger found guilty of sexual assault on a Spirit Airlines flight could face life in prison.
Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 35 was convicted by a federal jury.
The court heard Ramamoorthy, sexually assaulted a 22-year old woman while she slept.
Ramamoorthy carried out the attack even though he was sat next to his wife.
He said he couldn’t recall all details as he was in a ‘deep sleep’ at the time after taking medication.
In the US on a work visa, he will be deported after completing his sentence.
"Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. We will not tolerate the behavior of anyone who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position, and we are glad the jury agreed," said U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider.
According to the Washington Post, the FBI received reports of 63 sexual assaults on flights last year.
