Low cost carrier Spirit Airlines is banking on Orlando International Airport as a Launchpad for a major international expansion.

The Miramar, FL based budget airline just announced nine overseas routes out of MCO beginning in the fall.

From October 4 Spirit will start serving Guatemala City, Panama City, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, all initially four times a week.

The following two days sees the start of flights to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, San Jose, Costa Rica and San Salvador.

Then in November Spirit begins flights to Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena.

It will also fly to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands out of Orlando.

"Orlando is now one of our largest markets, and we have no plans on stopping our growth. The region is not only a wonderful, family-friendly destination, but it is well-positioned to now serve as a gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America," said Spirit CEO, Bob Fornaro.

At the same time the airline also unveiled three Carolinas routes to Myrtle Beach, Asheville and Greensboro.

Once the new flights launch Spirit will offer 38 destinations from the airport with up to 49 daily departures.

"We have been proud to serve Orlando for 25 years, and after more than doubling service last year, we are so proud to be expanding there yet again," Fornaro added.
