Sri Lanka tourism primed for cricket bonanza
Sri Lanka is hoping for a tourism boost from the ICC World Twenty20 tournament being played on the island from September 18-October 7.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau managing director, Rumy Jaufer, said the tournament was happening at a good time during Sri Lanka’s low season for tourism.
“We are expecting at least 10,000-15,000 fans from abroad, mostly from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh,” he added.
According to Jaufer, around 8,000 hotel rooms have been booked so far for the tournament, which will see matches played in cities across the country.
“This is a great promotional event for cricket-crazy Sri Lanka,” he said.
Helanka Vacations Colombo is offering Twenty20 packages for cricket fans, replicating the three- to five-day tours it organised during last year’s ICC Cricket World Cup jointly hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh.
