Staff evacuated at Thomas Cook shop after fire breaks out next door

Sunday, 20 Jul, 2012 0

Staff at the Thomas Cook store in Edinburgh city centre were evacuated yesterday afternoon after a fire broke out in a neighbouring building.

It is believed the blaze started in a restaurant just behind the agency in Hanover Street.

Fire crews used the Thomas Cook store to access the fire and agency staff were evacuated due to the smoke.

An eye witness who contacted TravelMole.com said about 10 fire engines were at the scene.

Initial reports in the Scottish press said the fire had actually started in the Thomas Cook branch, but a spokeswoman for the company said this was not the case.

Traffic diversions are in place in the surrounding area including Princes Street.

There are no reports of injuries.
