Star Cruises orders two mega ships designed for China market

Alongside sister brand Crystal Cruises’ mega ship order, Star Cruises has announced an order for two ‘Global Class’ series ships.

The huge 200,000 gross ton ships will have ‘Chinese characteristics’ and are the first to be purpose built for the China market.

The ships will have 5,000 lower berths, the company said.

"Passengers on our ‘Global Class’ ships will enjoy an international class cruise experience to all parts of the world, yet in an environment where they will feel at home, whether it is food, culture, shows, enrichment programs or excursions," said Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of parent Genting Hong Kong.

"With the first two ships, we are focused on delivering a world-class vacation experience for Chinese cruise passengers at an affordable price whilst enjoying fun-filled onboard and on-land adventures in many cities in the most seamless way."

Delivery of the ships will take place between 2019 and 2020 starting with one ship each year and increasing to two ships a year moving forward.

Genting Hong Kong also launched a luxury cruise line for the Asia market called Dream Cruises.

Genting recently completed a deal to acquire four shipyards in the Lloyd Werft Group which is tasked with constructing the 10 ship combined order for Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises.
