Startup Rayani Air warned by Malaysia’s transport ministry

Rayani Air, Malaysia’s first Syariah-compliant carrier could be in for some turbulence.

The Transport Ministry says it may consider suspending the new airline’s operations due to many customer complaints and its use of handwritten boarding passes.

"We will investigate why they used handwritten passes as we can go paperless and people use their handphones to check in. We have to investigate this case as it can be a security threat," transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told local media.

Liow said the ministry had already issued a warning to Rayani after flights were suddenly cancelled, stranding passengers.

Scores of customers were delayed at Langkawi in February after a cockpit window was discovered with a crack, forcing the plane out of service.

The airline apologised as it did not provide a timely alternative service for the stranded passenegers.

"We can even suspend the airline’s services if they’re not following our order. They need to comply with Department of the Civil Aviation (DCA) regulations. If there are more complaints, we can refer them to the Aviation Commission and will take note of all economic sector complaints," he said.
