Stelios fails to oust Sir Michael Rake – again
EasyJet chairman Sir Michael Rake has survived the latest attempt by the airline’s founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou to oust him.
In a vote called by Sir Stelios, easyJet’s founder and largest shareholder, 53.3% of shareholders voted for Sir Michael to stay.
After the vote, Charles Gurassa, deputy chairman and senior independent director of easyJet, said: "The Board continues to seek a constructive relationship with all its shareholders and urges Sir Stelios and easyGroup to engage with easyJet. I and other members of the Board are available to meet with them at any time".
Sir Stelios claims Sir Michael has too many commitments elsewhere and cannot devote enough time to his role at easyJet.
As well as being easyJet chairman, Sir Michael is also deputy chairman of Barclays, which is currently going through the Libor scandal. He is also chairman of BT and is on the board of US publisher McGraw-Hill.
It is the second time in six months that Sir Stelios has tried and failed to get rid of Sir Michael.
