Stricken Flyer back in action

SINGAPORE – The world’s biggest observation wheel is spinning again after a pre-Christmas fire trapped passengers for hours and led to a one-month shutdown of the attraction

The operators of the Singapore Flyer say the wheel has been cleared following tests of a new backup system.

On December 23 a small electrical fire trapped 173 people inside the Flyer’s enclosed cabins until power was restored six hours later. Ten people were rescued using harnesses.

Locals jokingly gave the wheel a new name – the Singapore Fryer.

The 42-storey Flyer is 165 metres high, 30 metres taller than Britain’s London Eye.
