Sun reporter says he smuggled “bomb” onto holiday jet
The Sun newspaper claims to have exposed an astonishing security shambles at Birmingham International Airport.
A journalist got a job as a baggage handler there despite giving a false address and bogus references – and claims to have smuggled a fake bomb into the hold of a holiday jet.
Anthony France says in the newspaper: “Incredibly, I was waved through a staff security checkpoint leading to the plane’s luggage hold – with components for the ‘device’ hidden in my shoe.”
The aircraft involved was a Thomas Cook flight to Majorca with 220 British passengers on board.
The journalist says he got the job at Birmingham after answering a newspaper advertisement by Aviance, the airport recruitment company.
Both Aviance and Thomas Cook Airlines are reported to be carrying out investigations into what happened, and an airport spokesman is quoted by The Sun as saying: “The safety and security of passengers remains our top priority.”
