Surfer loses arm in shark attack
A top surfer has lost her arm after an attack by a tiger shark in Hawaii.
Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton, who was on he way to becoming a professional surfer, was reportedly paddling in ‘crystal clear’ water off the island of Kauai, Hawaii, when the 15-foot tiger shark attacked, ripping off her left arm just below the shoulder.
According to the Daily Mail, she reportedly said: “None of us saw a thing. I was paddling after riding a wave; my left arm was hanging in the water and the shark just came and bit me. It pulled me back and forth like it was shaking me, but I clung to my board and then it let go.”
Experts say that the shark may have mistaken Bethany’s board for a dolphin or a turtle; it was the fourth attack of its type in Hawaii this year.
