‘Suspicious’ item on American Airlines plane was a child’s toy

A ‘suspicious’ package which caused a security alert after being found inside an American Airlines jet’s bathroom turned out to be a child’s toy.

All passengers and crew of American Airlines flight 5119 at Myrtle Beach International Airport were questioned by federal law enforcement and bomb sniffing canines were called.

Airport director Scott Van Moppes said it was a package that ‘appears to be a battery.’

However the alert was over some two hours later.

"As I understand it, it was determined to be a child’s toy, an electronic toy, found in the bathroom there as the plane was coming in for landing or on its way into Myrtle Beach," FBI Special Agent Don Wood said.

The plane, which landed from Charlotte, was held at Myrtle Beach along with all passengers for more than two hours.

The airport has since resumed all operations.

Authorities said no passenger has come forward to claim the offending item.
