Sustainable Tourism in Sierra Leone

Thursday, 27 Feb, 2008 0

The Banana Island Guest House commenced trading 14 months ago on a small island off the Western peninsula of Sierra Leone.
It consists of 3 chalets built with local materials , each with indoor shower and toilet facilities. We boast a restaurant and bar and our lobsters are legendary.
Banana Island is historic, was visited by the Portuguese in the 1800’s and served as a holding fort for slaves being shipped to the Americas. This is a community based project- the site being donated by the community. All our staff hail from the island and apart from employment opportunities, asmall’tax’ is levied on our guests which goes directly to community projects. The islanders are being taught the importance of preserving the environment as a selling attraction for tourists. There is no traffic, so no noise and you can cast your cares away.Visit www.bananaislandguesthouse-biya.org for more information.
