Sydney Airport under fire again
Reports in the SMH today reveal that dozens of international flights into Sydney Airport have been flouting the supposed 6am curfew and landing as early as 5am.
Every day up to four scheduled flights arrive at the airport as early as 5am despite the official curfew – imposed in 1995 to alleviate noise for nearby residents – operating from 11pm to 6am.
The pre-dawn landings are permitted under a little-known clause in the curfew legislation that allows up to five flights a morning during the 5am to 6am shoulder period, with a maximum cap of 24 per week. They are only allowed to fly in from Botany Bay, not over the city.
“I think people have got a right to expect that the curfew is real, that flights won’t be landing between 11pm and 6am.” claimed federal Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese, whose seat of Grayndler is one of the worst affected by aircraft noise.
A spokeman for Federal Transport Minister Warren Truss stated “The minister believes the curfew is working effectively.”
