Sydney Tower Skywalk Winter Solstice special

Saturday, 31 May, 2006 0

Sydneysiders will have the chance to be among the first in the city to see the sunrise on the Winter Solstice, Wednesday June 21, from the top of Sydney’s tallest building, Sydney Tower.

To celebrate the shortest day of the year and the start of longer days leading into the summer months, Sydney Tower is hosting a special breakfast on its 250-metre high observation deck, with admission including breakfast priced at $39.

For the first time Sydney Tower is also offering two ‘Winter Solstice’ Dawn Skywalks priced at $119, including breakfast, giving thrillseekers the chance to witness the sunrise from outside on the roof of its iconic turret.

Traditionally the turning point of winter, the sun will rise at its latest on Wednesday June 21 at 7am and will set at 4.54pm, providing just nine hours and 54 minutes of sunlight – almost a third less daylight than that of the longest day of the year, December 21.

To make the most of this shortest day of the year, Sydney Tower will open its doors at 5.30am and whisk guests up to the observation level. The lucky few who snare spots on the dawn Skywalks will suit up and head out onto the roof to take in the sunrise 260 metres above the city streets.

Early risers will toast the sun’s arrival with sparkling wine and a warming breakfast on the observation deck, while the Skywalkers will be the first to feel the sun’s warm rays on their faces before joining the breakfasting crowd below.

Twinings will provide a range of its speciality teas for guests as they wait for the sun, and 9TO5 magazine will hand out bags of ‘Winter Solstice’ treats, including the latest copy of the magazine.

Sydney Tower is so high that visitors will be able to enjoy an extra three minutes of sunshine in the morning, seeing the sun rise a full three minutes before the rest of Sydney.

More than twice the height of the Harbour Bridge and the same height as the famous Eiffel Tower, Sydney Tower boasts the best views of Sydney and surrounds, stretching up to 100km away. Sydney Tower + OzTrek are normally open daily 9am-10.30pm. For general information, visit www.sydneytoweroztrek.com.au or www.skywalk.com.au
