The TransAsia Airways ATR 72-500 turboprop that crashed in Taiwan on Wednesday had aborted its first landing and was attempting a go-around when it went down in a village near Magong Airport, local reports indicate.

Taiwanese officials are putting the death toll from the crash at 47.

The plane departed from the southern city of Kaohsiung but lost contact with controllers. Weather in the area was still unsettled following the recent passage of Typhoon Matmo but civil aviation officials said conditions were within safety limits for landing.

The plane was found at Penghu island’s Xixi village in flames, local media reported.

The 14-year-old ATR 72-500, operating as flight GE222, was carrying 54 passengers and four crew.
