A Taiwanese tourist died and a second was injured after an attack by a hippo in Kenya, Africa.

Chang Ming Chuang, 66 was bitten in the chest and later died in hospital.

The tourist was tracking the animal at a wildlife resort on Lake Naivasha, and witnesses said the two got too close.

The second tourist, named as Wu Peng Te, was treated for minor bruising.

"Our officers tracked and shot the animal after the incident," said Kenya Wildlife Service warden.

David Kilo, chairman of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association told local media the rising waters of the lake have cut grazing land for the hippos which have gradually encroached on land close to farms and resorts.

It is the sixth death by a hippo this year.

A local fisherman was killed by another hippo in the same area just hours earlier.

Hippos kill an estimated 500 across Africa each year and can weigh up to three tonnes.

Following this tragedy, the same Taiwanese tour group suffered further misfortune.

Their bus was involved in a traffic accident near Nairobi Airport.

The shuttle bus operated by Kenya Airways was hit by a trailer and forced off the road.

The airline said 20 tourists were hurt, with one suffering serious head injuries.
