Taiwan’s first LCC takes flight this month
Taiwan’s first budget carrier will take to the skies this month, announcing its maiden flight for September 26.
Tigerair Taiwan is a joint venture with Singapore’s low-cost carrier Tigerair and China Airlines and the inaugural flight will take off from Taiwan to Singapore.
Celebrating the arrival of a new A320 aircraft, the carrier hopes to expand quickly.
"We’d open up to three other flight routes to the Southeast Asian region after October," said airline spokesman Eric Lee.
Tigerair Taiwan also plans flights to South Korea and Japan beginning during the first quarter of 2015.
Over the next three years, it hopes to take delivery of another 11 A320 aircraft.
The joint venture is 90% owned by China Airlines with the remaining 10% in the hands of Tigerair.
Demand for budget airfares remains high in Asia, and a dozen low cost carriers including Malaysia-based AirAsia and Japan’s Peach Aviation fly to and from Taiwan.
Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways also plans to start its own budget carrier brand called V Air, due to begin services before the end of the year.
