Tassie Govt says don’t panic

The tourism industry’s concern about slowing in visitor numbers to the state has received a ”don’t panic” response from Tasmanian Government.

The Tourism Council in Tasmania has called for an extra $12 million to be spent on an interstate advertising campaign. While over the past five years there has been a 43 per cent increase in visitors to the state, the Council says that growth has stopped and operators are beginning to feel the pinch.

Paula Wreidt, Tasmania’s Tourism Minister says “there is still a high level of confidence in the industry and there is $600 million worth of tourism infrastructure projects on the drawing board”

ANZ chief economist Saul Eslake says “the fall in visitors is due to the strong Australian dollar and high petrol prices, which are discouraging day trippers and rental car tourists”.

In addition the Vineyards Association of Tasmania is critical of Tourism Tasmania focusing on increasing tourist numbers at the expense of targeting the high end of the market who provide higher yield.
