Ten dead after India hotel collapses

At least 10 are dead after a hotel in central India collapsed.

Several more are injured and the death toll could rise, authorities said, as the district administration in Indore ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

According to eye witnesses, a car rammed into the side of the three-storey hotel which then quickly came crashing down.

The MS Hotel was 60 years old and described as ‘dilapidated.’

"The hotel building was old. Its construction technique was also old. But its owner had tried to make it look spic and span by keeping it well painted and decorated from outside," said Indore Municipal Corporation commissioner Manish Singh.

"It has come to light that some repair work was going on inside the building for the last few days and that just before the mishap, a wall of the building collapsed following which the entire structure came crashing down," he said.

A detailed inquiry into the incident will be conducted to look at any building code violations.

Two adjacent buildings were damaged and all occupants were evacuated.

Rescue teams worked through Saturday night and managed to pull out 12 people, but all but two were dead or later succumbed to their injuries.
