Thai AirAsia spreading its wings to Sihanoukville
AirAsia’s Thai unit will begin flying to Cambodia’s beach town Sihanoukville this summer.
Flights linking the city with Bangkok Don Mueang kick off on July 1.
Malaysia based AirAsia also flies to Sihanoukville from Kuala Lumpur, while Thai AirAsia already serves Siem Reap and Pnom Penh.
"The new route will serve the millions of travellers who use Thailand as a hub while for thai travellers, Sihanoukville offers an affordable beach and cultural getaway," said Thai AirAsia CEO Santisuk Klongchaiya.
Sihanoukville’s airport was expanded last year with a terminal building renovation and the runway is being extended to eventually cater to long haul services.
Operator Cambodia Airports said air passenger traffic to the region increased by 92% in 2018 to 650,000 passengers.
As well as AirAsia, Chinese carriers Sichuan Airlines and Hainan Airlines are among the airlines offering scheduled international services from Sihanoukville.
The town’s tourism industry is growing in popularity not only from a big increase in airlift but also cruise traffic.
