Thai Airways makes big Airbus order

Sunday, 18 Feb, 2024 0

Thai Airways confirmed an order for 45 Boeing widebody jets.

The aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2033.

The airline aims to boost its fleet size after bankruptcy restructuring.

The deal sparked criticism from Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit.

The minister questioned whether a new aircraft order was wise considering its recent financial woes.

Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri responded by disclosing the plane order will be financed by leasing and hire-purchase contracts.

The plan to acquire new aircraft was indeed part of the company’s rehabilitation plan approved by the bankruptcy court.

The airline will announce full details of the order later this week at the Singapore Airshow.

From 2022, the airline began leasing more planes to meet short term demand.

It also plans to lease more narrow-body Airbus planes in late-2025.
