Thailand on track for luxury rail

BANGKOK -Trains in Thailand will gain super carriages to appeal to upmarket travellers, according to a Tourism Authority of Thailand plan to promote train travel in the domestic market.

TAT deputy governor for domestic marketing, Vansadej Thavarasukha, says the State Railway of Thailand will add high quality air-conditioned carriages to attract more Thai travellers.

“Two 60-seat carriages could be ready by next February,” he said. They will join two other carriages that are being used for weekend tours promoted by TAT.

TAT executive director central region, Chaisong Churitt, who is responsible for the project said: “We would like to attract mid to high spending travellers because they complain that Thai trains are not comfortable.

“We will create new on-board services such as massage, fortune tellers, bartenders, or even chat shows.

“Also the carriages will have better toilets, Internet connection and a karaoke room.”

The project has no clear target on sales, but it does illustrate just how under-used Thai trains are in tourism.
