Thailand to open 22 new national parks

Thailand has ambitious plans to ensure the country remains clean and green.

It will establish 22 new nation parks across the country with the goal of having more than half of its land and coastal areas reserved as protected forests and marine parks.

That would increase the number of protected areas to 155 nationwide, and is one tranche of Thailand’s 20-Year National Strategic Plan.

About half will be marine parks, TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said.

"Part of the work to increase the forest area as well as forestry conservation is by the national park system under three key mandates, which are environmental conservation, research and recreational development."

In the past three years five new parks have been established.

These include Namtok Chet Sao Noi, in eastern Saraburi, the mountainous Khun Sathan National Park, and Than Sadet-Ko Phangan National Park.

TAT is targeting 55% of the country to be given over to protected forested areas by 2037.
