Thailand touts ‘golf quarantine’ to boost inbound tourism
Thailand’s Tourism Minister has suggested a golf quarantine bubble to help boost inbound tourism.
Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn proposed a plan to permit foreigners to quarantine in golf resorts, allowing them to play golf rather than being locked away in their hotel room for 14 days.
"We are discussing with the Public Health Ministry and the country’s coronavirus taskforce to offer hotel and golf quarantine for tourists with medical certificates," the minister said.
The plan would enable guests to move around within the hotel and its grounds and play on the course under strict protocols.
Golf is a major tourism segment for the country, which attracted 40 million tourists in 2019.
Until recently, Thailand has coped quie well with the Covid pandemic but since December has seen several major clusters across the country.
It is now recording several hundred new Covid cases a day.
