The ash is back: Qantas, Virgin cancel Sydney flights
Airlines have continued to cancel flights across Australia as a new volcanic ash plume from Chilean volcano, Cordon Caulle, sweeps across the country.
Qantas cancelled 73 domestic flights and six trans-Tasman flights on Tuesday. Jetstar also cancelled flights.
Qantas flights to and from Adelaide were cancelled for the duration of the day.
All Qantas flights to and from Canberra were cancelled from mid-day and Qantas flights to and from Sydney were due to be suspended from 3pm local time Tuesday.
Virgin Australia suspended all services into and out of Sydney and Melbourne from 4.00pm local time until further notice
Virgin Australia suspended all services into and out of Canberra from 1.00pm.
Earlier, Virgin Australia halted services into and out of Adelaide and Mildura because of the return of the ash cloud. Tiger Airways also cancelled some services.
Virgin Australia group executive operations, Sean Donohue, said the latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre necessitated the suspension of some flights until further notice.
