The bastion: Castle with a view

Thursday, 14 Aug, 2007 0

One has visions of being in another country and era as one heads up the country road to the imposing Castle Kyalami Hotel , a landmark on the Johannesburg skyline. But with 360º vistas stretching into Magaliesburg, Johannesburg and Pretoria from the raised fortress, there is no doubt that the hotel is in the heart of South Africa.

This Gauteng landmark is set on 22 acres of beautiful indigenous gardens with easy access to airports and the Sandton central business district which can be seen in the distance although it is only a brief 15 minutes away by car.

The Castle Kyalami is a unique function venue that offers an original platform for conferences, launches, functions and weddings. There are a variety of function rooms, conference rooms, open decks, and a number of private venues available.Formerly a private residence and once rumoured to be a potential home to pop star Michael Jackson, the property was sold on auction and converted into the imposing venue it is today.

But the hotel says that it prides itself on offering a relaxed atmosphere for visitors, guests and diners, and this is particularly noticeable in the Bastion restaurant. Its menu emphasizes modern contemporary cuisine and bold flavours, using the freshest ingredients. For example, the hotel says that all fish is fresh and not frozen, with the best Scottish salmon being flown in every Tuesday from Europe. There is an open plan main dining area as well as private rooms where dinner can be served to a selected party. After dinner, smokers can retire to the comfortable cigar lounge to enjoy a brandy.

The Bastion is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as high teas. Sunday brunches are always popular and have live music. For bookings ring: (011) 799-7676 .
