Newspaper’s panel of experts put together their top 50 beaches

The Independent has named its 50 favourite beaches in Europe – and top of the list is a little-known destination between the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica.

Lavezzi marine reserve, in France, wins the title because of its amazing coral that is “as colourful as anything you will find on the Great Barrier Reef” and shoals of huge grouper fish that are “practically tame”.

Second in the list comes Lanzarote’s Playa Blanca, named as “the best spot on the island for smaller children” because of its shallow, calm waters. Third was Mundaka, in Spain, for its superb surfing.

The rest of the top 10, nominated by a panel of five “beach experts” including a surfer and a scuba enthusiast, were: 4. Hossegor, France; 5. St Mawes, Cornwall; 6. Bisevo Island, Croatia; 7. Palombaggia, Corsica; 8. Tullen Strand, Ireland; 9. Turtle Beach, Dalyan, Turkey; 10. The Mount, near Portofino, Italy.
