The dog that bolted off the belt

A pet dog that escaped after it was offloaded onto a baggage handling conveyor belt in India caused panic – and embarrassment – to airport authorities.

The dog escaped the Chennai airport premises through an open gate and was only traced after roaming a local neighborhood for 36 hours.

A red alert was sounded as the dog ran out of the terminal and into the airfield, before managing to escape through a gate
left open for an incoming truck.

Babita Jacob, a resident of Al Ain, was travelling on Emirates airline with Ricky, her eight month old Persian greyhound, which was allowed to fly with the passenger and not as cargo.

At Chennai, a latch on the dog’s cage broke while on the conveyor belt, allowing the dog – which was wearing a t-shirt – to escape.

According to Emirates 24/7 , almost 100 volunteers from a group called “friends of Police” were pressed into service

When found, the dog was being walked along the street by a passer-by.

Airport authorities were reluctant to comment.
