The Maldives lifts all restrictions for tourists

Tuesday, 17 Jun, 2020 0

The Maldives will now allow tourists to visit without restrictions starting in July.

It rolled back a series of strict measures originally planned for its reopening.

Last month the government said it would impose a tourist visa of $100, require a minimum 14-day stay, and mandate a pre-arrival negative Covid-19 test.

They would then be tested a second time on arrival at an additional cost of $100.

This has now all been ditched and visitors of all nationalities can come without any restrictions including no minimum stay requirement.

Social distancing will still be required, and face masks are to be worn in public areas.

Resorts also will be required to have a ‘Safe Tourism Licence.’

This requires having certified medical personnel on call and having ‘adequate stock’ of personal protection equipment.

Rooms must be made available for isolating tourists or resort staff who fall ill.

The island nation has recorded about 2,000 Covid-19 cases resulting in five deaths.

The Maldives welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors in 2019 and before the pandemic tourism officials had targeted more than two million for this year.
