The Pope is all powerful!

Qantas engineers have temporarily ceased industrial action until after World Youth Day events, with the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) today announced rolling stoppages would be deferred until after the Pope’s visit to Sydney on July 15 to 20 to avoid disruption to the public.

Qantas engineers want a five per cent pay rise, saying the average base wage rises of 1.7 per cent over a 10-year period is not acceptable.

ALAEA official Wayne Vasta said the industrial campaign would continue until members were secured “the best deal possible,” following a meeting with Qantas today.

“The outcome of today’s meeting leaves us with little option other to continue our industrial campaign,” Mr Vasta said.

“Parties aren’t any further apart or closer towards a resolution.”

But he said the union was “100 per cent genuine” about respecting the needs of the travelling public.

“We have decided that any further stoppages should wait until after school holidays and the Pope’s visit for World Youth Day – recognising the significance of this international event.”

“Later this month the ALAEA will review our industrial options – we have always regarded this as a long-term campaign and that remains the case today.”

“We’re hopeful of a resolution,” Mr Vasta said.

Qantas Airlines executive general manager John Borghetti said the company was disappointed that an agreement could not be reached today.

“We welcome the ALAEA’s decision not to strike during World Youth Day events, but they would also need to list their overtime bans and go slow campaign to truly minimise disruption to our passengers,” Mr Borghetti said.

Union representatives will meet again with Qantas next Tuesday.
