The real tourism picture in Fiji

Sunday, 11 May, 2007 0

With TravelMole reporting on location from Fiji’s Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange in Denarau, Fiji all week next week, FVB’s CEO, Bill Gavoka, has said that the announcement by the Fiji Government to extend the state of emergency in Fiji to the end of the month could impact on the recovery of Fiji’s tourism industry.

Fiji media and other sources in Fiji say that Mr Gavoka and FVB are not happy with the extension and that they are in discussion with the Government to end, what is considered the unnecessary state of emergency.

FVB is also cash strapped to undertaken any marketing activity with the Government saying that the trade should pay.

Subsequently New Zealand has re-issued its travel advisory for Fiji, describing the situation as uncertain.

Australia has not at this time re-issued its advisory, but the seriousness with which travellers take advisories into account has been cast into serious doubt recently by the issuing of advisories to Ireland advising travellers to take care driving on wet roads in Ireland!

Mr Gavoka has also recently said that stated that current tourism figures show that the industry is slowly recovering, with visitor numbers, particularly from New Zealand, higher than expected.

The Mole will be reporting on whether Fiji is safe for travellers and the FVB’s and the Minster for Tourism’s views on the situation and also what Aussie and Kiwi agents can do to help the very mixed business picture emerging out of Fiji.

The Mole is visiting a number of the resorts visited just after the coup in January and will also be reporting with their views how business is going.
