Thomas Cook compensates family after illness at Egypt hotel
Thomas Cook is in talks with lawyers to reach a final settlement for a family-of-four who fell ill with gastroenteritis during a luxury holiday to Egypt with the operator.
The Wright family, from Sheldon, Birmingham, became ill just a few days into a two-week stay in August 2013 at Le Royal Holiday Resort.
According to law firm Irwin Mitchell, settlements have already been secured for the mother Tracy, and the daughters Danielle, 12, and Chloe, 16, but Thomas Cook has yet to agree settlement for the father, David.
"Nothing is more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of our customers," said Thomas Cook in a statement.
"It is never our intention to disappoint our customers, and we are always concerned to hear of any sickness reported while on holiday. We are liaising closely with Mr Wright’s solicitors and hope to reach an agreement shortly."
But the law firm criticised Thomas Cook for taking too long.
Jatinder Paul, an associate at Irwin Mitchell, said: "It’s very disappointing that after settling the cases for three of the family, Thomas Cook, is still dragging its heels as we seek to resolve David’s case. We hope they will work with us to agree a fair settlement without the need for court proceedings."
Mr Wright told lawyers he was concerned about hygiene at the hotel, which had only been open for one year, after ‘spotting soiled sun loungers next to the hotel pool, discoloured water in one of the swimming pools and, on one occasion, being served drinks in filthy glasses’.
