ThomsonTV goes ‘on demand’ on the internet

ThomsonTV claims to be the first travel-shopping channel to offer both holiday programmes and live broadcasts on demand via the internet.

Viewers can search for programmes or destinations and view them ‘on demand’ on their desktops at www.thomsonTV.com by searching for a certain country or particular holiday category, from city and ski to villa and beach breaks, the company says.

Users can also view the channel as it is broadcast live and minimize the screen on their computer, reducing the programme to their toolbar until a particular holiday destination or programme takes their eye.

The move comes as ThomsonTV moves to new, larger studios in London this week to aid the channel’s expansion.

Thomson claims that more than 600,000 passengers booked their holidays via digital and satellite travel channels last year. With more than half the population having digital TV in their homes, this figure is set to increase by 15% this year.

Head of ThomsonTV Neil Hardy said: “We know viewers on average watch for 15 minutes and will turn over if the programme is not relevant to their needs, so it’s vital we start offering more specific programmes.

“This new technology allows us to offer viewers the programme they want, when they want it, making ThomsonTV increasingly relevant to anyone looking for their next holiday. Now a quick search will bring a selected programme to their computer within seconds.

“The ability to offer video on demand means we can start producing programmes tailored to individual audiences. In addition to featuring more up and coming destinations such as Bulgaria and Egypt, new shows will include school holiday breaks, last minute deals, luxury holidays, celebrity hot spots and news items.”

The live streaming technology used by the channel was developed in association with Narrowstep, which enables TV companies to appear on the internet and send their programmes direct to computers, as well as other mobile and wireless devices.
