Thousands of passengers are facing delays and cancellations as US flights are hit again by extreme winter weather.

Today, 1,997 flights were cancelled within, into or out of the States, with 154 flights delayed. Yesterday there were 1,971 cancellations and 6,315 delays according to flight tracking website, Flight Aware.

On Saturday, 6,071 flights within, into or out of the States were affected – 5,588 delays and 483 cancellations.

Forecasters are expecting a layer of ice and between 8 to 12 inches of snow by the end of today in Washington and the Mid-Atlantic Region, brought by winter storm Titan.

British Airways warned passengers that the winter storm may disrupt flights across the Northeast of the USA.

Airports most affected are in Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston.

Last night, the federal government announced that its Washington-area offices will be closed today.

Authorities warned of possible power outages and flight disruptions from weather that could affect millions.
