Three Chinese tourists are confirmed dead and a further five missing after a Malaysian tourist boat sank in poor weather off Sabah in eastern Malaysia.

Officials said 22 people, including two out the three crew members were rescued.

The boat had set off early on Saturday from Tanjung Aru heading for the offshore island Pulau Mengalum.

After it failed to return as planned late Saturday the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency conducted a search and rescue operation in the surrounding waters.

"According to the skipper, the boat was ‘broken’ after being hit by waves and sank," Ahmad Puzi Kahar, head of the MMEA, said in a statement.

The search and rescue operation will resume early Monday with naval ships and the air force.
