Police in the US say there have been three fatalities after an Amtrak train derailed and carriages fell onto the highway below in Washington state during Monday’s morning rush hour.
Four carriages are believed to have left the track, with one landing upside down on the I-5 highway, near DuPont, in Pierce County, 40 miles south of Seattle, just before 8am local time.
The derailed carriages struck several cars on the highway, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s department.
The Amtrak train was on its first high-speed service as part of an initiative to cut journeys between Seattle and Portland.
