Three firms compete to design tourism project

Three architectural companies have been selected to compete for architecture design of a multi million dollar “mixed use” tourism property development in Nausori outside Suva, Fiji.

Australian firm Hames Sharley, submitting with Suva based firm Yellow, Californian Studio Pali Fekete architects and Melbourne based Lab Architecture Studio, have been selected.

Dr Brad Carver, Chairman of Executive Development Properties (Fiji) Ltd, the master developers for The Haven, says the firms submitted for The Haven Architectural Design Competition, which closed early this month for the chance to design some of the major components of the 19-acre tourism project, including a commercial and retail centre and a hotel.

Dr Carver said that EDP was committed to ‘world’s best practice’ for the project and that the company directors felt that an international architecture design competition would be a good way to attract the world’s best architects.

“We were delighted by the outstanding response to the competition and with the exceptionally high quality of the submissions that we received,” said Dr Carver.

“The three selected firms were competing against more than a dozen entries from all over the world including Europe, United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States, Australia, as well as from Fiji.

He says the portfolios submitted by the three winning candidates show a significant diversity in style and all firms have excellent credentials and proven track records on a range of major international projects.”

The Haven will be Fiji’s first multifaceted commercial tourism, entertainment and residential ‘mixed use’ property development for the Eastern Division of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island and home to Fiji’s capital city, and regional ‘hub’ Suva.

The picturesque site annexing Nausori Town’s CBD will house a retail centre, a hotel, serviced apartments and a gated residential community featuring architect designed homes, a terrace house development and apartments, all with access to community services and facilities, green space and lifestyle amenities.

EDP Fiji’s managing director, Neale Slack said, “We are determined to make The Haven, Nausori a preferred destination in its own right and excellence in design of the built form will play a major role in achieving that aim.”
