Three million Italians prepare to fake it

Many unwilling to admit they are going without a holiday, so they tell lies

Some three million Italians have been accused of faking it – going on holiday, that is. Research by a voluntary organisation founded by psychologists suggests that 19 per cent of Italians will not go anywhere on holiday, but only two thirds of them will admit as much; the others will lie through their teeth to save face, so to speak.

The organisation, Help Me, which is aimed at providing support for those with mental problems, said Italy’s non-holidaymakers were prepared to go to some lengths to hide the fact they were staying at home. Of those who admitted they were planning to fake their holidays, two thirds said they would read up on their imaginary destination.

And, The Guardian reports, 24 per cent said they were planning to hire a sun-lamp to attain a suitable skin tone, and incredibly, 19 per cent said they were planning to take their plants to a neighbour in an effort to convince them they were heading off somewhere nice.
