Tiger $10 fares

A report by Steve Creedy in The Australian says that Tiger Airways is betting on low fares rather than government fat cats to make a success of its newly announced Melbourne-Canberra route.

The airline yesterday backed the new service – announced along with new routes from its Melbourne hub to Newcastle and Hobart – with promotional, tax-inclusive air fares starting at $9.95 one-way.

The new services, due to start in the New Year, bring the carrier’s destinations to 12 ahead of its expected launch next month.

Canberra has proved difficult for carriers, with both Virgin Blue and Regional Express in the past axing services between the nation’s capital and Sydney because of lack of patronage by bureaucrats used to lounges and other privileges.

This was despite government pressure on departments to take the lower fares offered by the Qantas rivals. Virgin is now making a renewed assault armed with a new aircraft type and a lounge of its own, but Tiger says it will attack the route on the basis of its low fares only.

Tiger chief executive Tony Davis said the airline believed there was demand for travel to and from Canberra from people not travelling on expense accounts but who wanted to travel for personal or leisure reasons.

“There are lots of people who live in and around Canberra who are frankly sick and tired of being treated like government or corporate travellers when … all they want is access to the same kind of fares that other major cities around the country are getting,” he said.
