Tokyo DisneySea getting multi-billion dollar upgrade
Tokyo DisneySea is to get a huge upgrade with new areas based on Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan, and another resort hotel.
The park’s operator Oriental Land, announced it will pump $2.3 billion into the expansion which is in addition to previously announced renovation project at Tokyo Disneyland.
Oriental Land is also extending its licensing agreement with Walt Disney Co for a further 30 years.
That will take its contract to 2076.
It expects the work to be completed by 2022.
The new themed areas will make up a new ‘port’ at Disney’s only water-based park.
Tokyo DisneySea opened in 2001 and sits adjacent to Tokyo Disneyland, which was Disney’s first park outside the US.
Kyoichiro Uenishi, chief operating officer of Oriental Land said the expansion should bring in an extra $460 million a year in revenue and it may increase ticket prices to fund the work.
The new hotel will have 475 rooms and will ‘rise above and around the magical springs that serve as the core of the new themed port’s story,’ the company said in a release.
