Toronto hits right notes for conventioneers
Toronto overcame fierce US competition looming passport requirements and the rising dollar to lure three major US-based conventions that will bring in 25,000 delegates spending almost $26 million.
The largest of the three conventions is the 12,000-delagates from the Barbershop Harmony Society.
“Through a combination of direct sales and an emphasis on industry-leading service, we are helping meeting planners look past these factors,” said Bruce MacMillan, president and CEO of Tourism Toronto.
He said the city has stepped up its efforts to attract US meetings, partly with seven full-time sales staff in Chicago and Washington, DC.
So far this year, Tourism Toronto is 21% ahead of last year’s pace in total room night bookings for future meetings.
In a Flaspohler survey, Tourism Toronto was rated the number one convention and visitors bureau in Canada and fourth in North America out of 45 cities.
