Tough South Dakota abortion law driving away tourists?

Friday, 01 Aug, 2006 0

After South Dakota enacted the nation’s strictest abortion law, some tourism officials wondered about future visitation to the state by both leisure travelers and groups.

The question came up particularly when a Wisconsin pro-choice group announced a boycott.

But there’s been no downturn of the $192 million annual meeting and convention market in Rapid City, said Michelle Lintz, the CVB’s executive director.

“As far as I know, there have been no cancellations of conventions,” she told meetingsindustrymegasite.

Teri Ellis Schmidt at the Sioux Falls CVB said she received about 15 e-mails on the subject but none from meeting attendees.

In Sturgis, which in August draws a half a million motorcycle enthusiasts for a yearly rally, there also was no lessening of demand, according to Mike Ziegler, the town’s mayor.
