Tour the Tiwi Islands with Aussie Adventure Holidays

Sunday, 16 Mar, 2007 0

If you are looking for a real Aboriginal cultural exchange, then this is it. There are no touristy gimmicks, tacky souvenir shops or high tech staged performances. You’ll visit the modern day Aboriginal community of Nguiu (pronounced new-you) with a population of 2000 and be shown around by a local guide.

The Tiwi people are experts at living off the land and often collect their favourite bush foods. Dare to try mangrove worm or the local favourite, carpet snake. Don’t worry, you won’t have to rely on your catch, as meals are provided.

A two-day camping tour to Bathurst Island provides a unique opportunity to experience a modern day Aboriginal community and learn about the history and the culture of the Tiwi People from a local resident’s perspective, plus the adventure of camping in a remote location and learning more about the way of life on the Island.

Tiwi Islands Aboriginal Culture and Wildlife two-day camping adventure, priced from $475 per person, land only. Flights from $170

Highlights include: visit the museum and learn about the Tiwi history and culture; explore some successful arts and crafts centres and see artists’ work; spend time with Tiwi ladies enjoying billy tea and damper while they work on their weaving and painting and show you their totem dances; set out for a scenic drive through the wilderness of Bathurst Island; visit a local waterhole for a swim; learn about traditional bush tucker, bush medicine and natural fibres and dyes; take a walk over the sand dunes to admire the views and a Tiwi Island sunset before dinner around the campfire.

Aussie Adventure Holidays is the small group specialist of the Northern Territory with group sizes ranging from two to 25 passengers depending on the tour. The small group size allows for more individual interaction with guides, the chance to meet unique local characters and the opportunity to explore off the beaten track attractions.

Aussie Adventure Holidays is a sister company of AAT Kings, the premier holiday operator specialising in Australia and New Zealand.
