Tourism body calls for Sydney airport curfew review

The Tourism Industry Council of New South Wales has called for curfew changes at Sydney Airport following news that Emirates Airlines faces the potential of heavy fines for weather-delayed departures out of Sydney

The council’s general manager Andrew Jefferies said, “It is simply absurd that carriers are not given dispensation to depart after the curfew in the event of weather related delays, particularly when thunderstorms drastically reduce or stop aircraft movements altogether.”

“The ‘hard’ curfew hours of 11pm and 6am restrict the operations of Sydney Airport and limit the competitiveness of Australia’s global gateway, particularly when compared to Melbourne, Brisbane and its regional neighbours in the Asia-Pacific,” Jefferies added.

The federal government’s Department of Infrastructure and Transport is investigating three breaches by Emirates.

One alleges Emirates flight EK413 from Sydney to Dubai departed well after 11pm despite being refused permission to do so.

Emirates is believed to have provided a detailed response to the department about the breaches. The department will provide a brief to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will then have to decide whether to press charges, The Age reported.
